Understanding Before Labels

Adult ADHD Assessments in South Florida

An ADHD assessment should not feel like being judged against a checklist. It should feel like someone finally helping you make sense of your story.

Instead of only asking, “Do you meet diagnostic criteria?”

We also ask, “What best explains your experience?”

Together, we explore the patterns behind your attention, motivation, emotions, executive functioning, strengths, challenges, coping strategies, and the amount of effort it has taken to keep everything together.

Your lived experience is essential. The assessment is something we explore together—not something that is simply done to you.

Recognizing the Pattern

Adult ADHD can look different than people expect

You do not have to be visibly hyperactive, disruptive, or failing in every area of life to have ADHD. Many adults compensate for years before the cost becomes impossible to ignore.

Time blindness

Time feels slippery

You underestimate how long things will take, lose track of time, or live in cycles of rushing and catching up.

Task paralysis

Starting feels impossible

You know what needs to happen but cannot consistently make your brain begin—even when the task matters.

Inconsistent attention

Your attention is inconsistent

You may struggle to focus on routine tasks while becoming completely absorbed in something interesting or urgent.

Difficulty prioritizing tasks

Everything feels equally urgent

Prioritizing, organizing, remembering, and moving between tasks can take far more energy than others realize.

Emotional regulation

Emotions arrive quickly

Criticism, frustration, rejection, or overwhelm may feel intense and take time to settle in your nervous system.

Burnout from compensating

You are exhausted from compensating

Perfectionism, anxiety, overpreparing, and last-minute urgency may be holding things together at a significant cost.

Why It Gets Missed

Maybe no one noticed how much effort it took

Many adults reach adulthood without ADHD being recognized. You may have earned good grades, been quiet in school, developed elaborate systems, or appeared capable from the outside.

ADHD can be obscured by anxiety, depression, trauma, perfectionism, people-pleasing, high ability, structured environments, or the fear of disappointing others. Life transitions can also expose difficulties that were previously supported by routines, family, school, or crisis-driven motivation.

An affirming assessment looks at both visible outcomes and the invisible work required to achieve them.

You may have heard:

  • “You’re too successful to have ADHD.”
  • “Everyone procrastinates sometimes.”
  • “You just need a better routine.”
  • “You can focus when you want to.”
  • “It’s probably just anxiety.”

Your coping skills do not erase the difficulty underneath them.

Looking at the Full Picture

What an adult ADHD assessment explores

ADHD does not exist in a vacuum. The goal is to understand your attention and executive functioning within the context of your development, mental health, relationships, responsibilities, and daily life.

01

Attention regulation

Distractibility, hyperfocus, interest-based attention, mental wandering, and difficulty sustaining effort.

02

Executive functioning

Starting, planning, prioritizing, organizing, remembering, shifting, and completing tasks.

03

Developmental history

Patterns across childhood, adolescence, school, work, home, and relationships—not only current symptoms.

04

Emotional regulation

Frustration tolerance, overwhelm, impulsive reactions, sensitivity to criticism, and recovery after stress.

05

Compensation and masking

Perfectionism, overpreparing, urgency, rigid systems, people-pleasing, and hiding areas of difficulty.

06

Overlapping explanations

Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep, autism, burnout, substance use, medical factors, and other possibilities.

The Assessment Process

What to expect

Your assessment is tailored to your questions, goals, history, and chosen assessment option.

01
Questions

Begin with your questions

What are you hoping to understand?

We discuss what brought you here, the patterns you have noticed, and what you hope to gain. If ADHD is not the only possibility, we identify the most appropriate assessment pathway.

02
History

Share your history

Your experiences have a context.

You complete thoughtfully selected intake forms and questionnaires exploring development, school, work, relationships, attention, executive functioning, emotions, coping, and current concerns.

03
Assessment

Complete the assessment

We look beyond one questionnaire.

Structured clinical interviewing, evidence-based measures, guided reflection, and collaborative discussion help us identify meaningful patterns across settings and throughout your life.

04
Assessment

Connect the pieces

ADHD is one possible explanation.

I integrate your history, responses, measures, strengths, difficulties, and relevant differential considerations to determine what best explains your experiences.

05
Findings

Receive your findings

Clarity should be useful.

Depending on your selected option, you receive a personalized findings summary or comprehensive report with diagnostic impressions when appropriate, recommendations, resources, and next steps.

06
Findings

Make sense of it together

You do not leave with a label and no direction.

We review your results, answer questions, and discuss what the findings may mean for therapy, accommodations, medication consultation, daily supports, or deeper self-understanding.

Questions

Adult ADHD assessment FAQ

Can I have ADHD if I did well in school?

Yes. Grades alone cannot determine whether someone has ADHD. Interest, intelligence, structure, anxiety, perfectionism, family support, and last-minute urgency can help someone perform well while still experiencing significant difficulty. The assessment considers both outcomes and the effort required to achieve them.

What if I was not hyperactive as a child?

ADHD can involve predominantly inattentive symptoms, and hyperactivity may be internal or subtle. Some people experience racing thoughts, restlessness, excessive talking, fidgeting, difficulty relaxing, or a constant need for stimulation rather than obvious physical hyperactivity.

Do I need childhood records or a parent interview?

Childhood information is important because ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, but formal school records or parent participation may not always be available. We can discuss the sources of developmental information available to you and what is clinically necessary for your assessment.

Will I automatically receive an ADHD diagnosis?

No. The purpose is to determine what best explains your experiences. Findings may support ADHD, another explanation, overlapping conditions, or a recommendation for additional evaluation. A diagnosis is provided only when clinically supported.

Can you assess ADHD and autism together?

Yes, when both ADHD and autism are relevant to your questions, a broader ADHD, autism, or AuDHD assessment pathway may be more appropriate. We can determine the best fit before beginning.

Can the assessment be completed virtually?

Yes. Adult ADHD assessments are available through secure telehealth to adults located in Florida. The process may include virtual clinical interviews, online questionnaires and measures, guided activities, and a feedback session.

Can I use the results to discuss medication?

Your findings may be shared with a qualified prescribing professional for consideration, but medication decisions are made by that provider. Nonlinear Minds Therapy does not prescribe medication and cannot guarantee that another provider will accept a particular assessment.

Can the assessment support accommodation requests?

The Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment may include formal documentation and accommodation recommendations when clinically appropriate. Acceptance is determined by the employer, school, testing agency, or other organization reviewing the request.

Do you accept insurance?

Assessment services are private pay. A superbill may be provided for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your insurance plan.

Is this a neuropsychological evaluation?

No. This is a clinical diagnostic assessment. It does not include IQ testing, learning-disability testing, or comprehensive cognitive and neuropsychological testing.
